FILM: Attack on the Pin-Up Boys

💩💩💩💩💩

In an effort to pad out the number of posts, since songs that I thought were SJ solo songs, or SJ feat. Other Person, are turning out to be Other Person feat. SJ, I decided to write up Super Junior’s movie, Attack on the Pin-Up Boys. This was produced by Lee Soo Man (of course) and written by Park Yeonseon, who has written several other K-dramas and movies. Why would Super Junior get their own non-documentary feature film, you might ask, when they had not even existed for two full years yet and they weren’t even up to their second album? How exactly short was the production time on this, given that it was released July 2007, Kyuhyun’s accident was in April 2007, and Kyuhyun isn’t in this due to accident? These are all damn good questions! Because this movie is fucking awful! Spoilers under the cut. (It’s a ten year old movie, but you never know.)

ok what is with super junior and snoopy??

This is the point at which I stop and say, okay, there have been a number of songs now that sounded just about like this one, and all of them remind me of the first one of these that I ever heard, which is “Is It OK?” by f(x) from… 2011? Jesus, SM was still doing songs that sounded like this in 2011? Actually, go listen to that f(x) song, and then listen to the beginning of this one. Or vice versa. It’s like xerox copies. WHO ELSE GOT THIS SONG? How many versions of it did SHINee and TVXQ do? Probably SNSD has at least one too. What the hell.

Lyrics OnlyMV (not counting this in score because Super Junior is not in it, but it seems to be official)

Release Date: 04/04/2007

This is the first previously-unheard song I’ve heard on this project that made me start singing along with it in my head. It’s a somewhat more love-centric song than “Success” was, but the lyrics still ooze “I am a troubled person who is lost in my own head a lot of the time.” And this thing just sounds like a theme song. Wikipedia, since I wasn’t able to independently confirm, are you sure “Success” was the theme song and not “H.I.T”? Ending theme, maybe?

I am surprised at for how comparatively long I had to dig to get a clear picture of who is performing on this and who has which lines. It’s actually just Donghae, Sungmin, Yesung and Ryeowook – some sites list it as DRYS2K which um, I don’t think this particular group did enough songs by themselves to merit a subunit acronym, but sure. And I only found one video that shows who is singing – no lyrics sites split it out, and the video that does show who’s singing has the lyrics in Portuguese (which I can sort of read but would not call myself competent in any way, shape, or form). So I had to cobble a text file together to follow along with this. Anyway, per Wikipedia, this is the opening theme song from “H.I.T,” a gritty police procedural with a little bit of romance in it, but mostly police stuff. (If it’s anything like American police procedurals, the romance part is probably “we are both suffering from PTSD BUT AT LEAST IT’S TOGETHER.”) I haven’t found a version of this song with a decent bitrate, which is too bad as this sounds like a song that needs it.

Dana and Lina are from TSZX, also known as The Grace, also known as CSJH, because one can never have too many names, and they appeared here with Sungmin on I don’t know what this is. I have seen it referred to as “Student’s Cheersong” but I can’t find any information about whether that was a kdrama, a random compilation album, or what. And that is unfortunate because it messes with my scoring, because who knows what the intended context for this is! You’d think it’d be easiest with OST/compilation stuff. Bahhh. I went through this list and saw nothing that sounded like Student’s Cheersong. If you know more about what this is from, let me know and I’ll edit/re-review! Until then, based on the title, the lyrics of the song, and the release date, I am going to guess this was from some sort of album for high school and/or college graduation.

Lyrics Only | Live (really live, and everyone’s having pitch issues)

I started this post two days ago, immediately after completing a draft for “First Express”, and was so underwhelmed, and so bogged down by “unghh”ness that I just added a featured image and then saved it with a note to come back to it later. So here’s a note to future me: Don’t do that, because it tricks your brain into thinking it’s complete, and you lose motivation to do significant further work on it. And here’s another note, from about 36 hours after that one – don’t think too hard about how underwhelming a thing is, or it’ll be even harder to dig out of it!

Lyrics Only | Live with Tae Jin-ah

Release Date: 2/23/2007

The first B-side from the “Rokkugo” single is this much more recognizably trot song, wrapping up in a brisk 2:24 and featuring trot veteran Bang Silyi. It’s a much more serious song lyrically, and Super Junior performs it more seriously, and that’s probably a large part of why I don’t like it as much.

MV | Alternate Japanese MV (feat. Moeyan) | Live (SS3, 2011)

Release Date: 02/23/2007

Lee Soo Man apparently created Super Junior-T in an attempt to save the flagging trot music industry. I have read about trot, and listened to what I am told is trot, and I can’t tell what the hell defines trot music because the definition has, I think, gotten stretched too far. Traditional Korean two-step, apparently. This is allegedly trot, and so is “I Love You” by 2NE1, and so is this by Hong Jinyoung, and this by Na Hoona, and for me, once you start making it all electrodance the trot bits get washed out. This is my son’s favorite Super Junior song, though, and one of my favorites too; when I decided to learn more about Super Junior, I looked up videos by their subunits, and this and “Cooking? Cooking!!” are what pushed me down the rabbit hole.

Lyrics Only | Live (from KRY’s 2010-11 tour)

Another day, another KRY soundtrack ballad. Are you getting a bit bored of these? Me too. KRY as a unit goes away for about three years after this song, so no worries. On a slightly more interesting level, Kibum actually was in this drama (2006-07’s Snow Flower), so there’s a little bit of extra SJ-ness here. He’s not on the song, though.
