This is the point at which I stop and say, okay, there have been a number of songs now that sounded just about like this one, and all of them remind me of the first one of these that I ever heard, which is “Is It OK?” by f(x) from… 2011? Jesus, SM was still doing songs that sounded like this in 2011? Actually, go listen to that f(x) song, and then listen to the beginning of this one. Or vice versa. It’s like xerox copies. WHO ELSE GOT THIS SONG? How many versions of it did SHINee and TVXQ do? Probably SNSD has at least one too. What the hell.
This song appeared on SMTown’s 2007 summer compilation, which was all covers, by SJ, BoA, TVXQ, Kangta, TSZX, and Zhang Liyin, along with “SM Town” which I don’t know exactly who that was. General bad taste in my mouth about recycled songs aside (theoretically I should be mad about the f(x) song, not this one), much like “Tic Toc”, this takes a stab at reproducing “Dancing Out,” which remains the best SMTown compilation song Super Junior did up to this point. And also like “Tic Toc”, it doesn’t quite succeed, but it does do a better job. It doesn’t actively sound like summer so much as it sounds like playing outside in the sunshine, which is close enough, I guess, and it brings back audible harmonies that don’t always just follow the lead vocal. Eunhyuk and Shindong do all the rapping, which means Kibum has to sing, and while he’s not terrible, he and Leeteuk are audibly the weakest ones here. (I still don’t get why everyone says Siwon can’t sing – no, he’s not astoundingly great, but where do you hear the awfulness? He has a very silly solo in SS6 in which he belts and holds a goddamn C5 and who woulda thunk he could do that?) This is also a cover of the very, very 90s-sounding “Happiness” by H.O.T. (though that and “Candy” are good places to start if you want to learn about the origins of modern Kpop), and if I had to pick between the two, I think I would pick SJ’s, just because I don’t know if I can handle that many orchestra hits.
In the video, Super Junior is back to showing off their silly, charismatic side: Yesung gets a paper T_T on his face, Shindong and Eunhyuk make extravagant grunty faces in the gym, Heechul smiles, and everybody makes the saranghae hearts on their heads and gives air-hugs, etc. I don’t have the strong feelings about the video like I do with “Rokkugo” but I feel like I could gif at least 50% of this (but I won’t, to spare your browser). Also, I think those glasses Yesung is wearing are his real prescription glasses, because he wears the same pair in the “Pajama Party” video about a year after this. (He should wear them more often; they look good on him.) The video concludes with Super Junior offering what is probably a very controlled “free hugs” session, “controlled” because you can see all the squealing fans neatly giving SJ a wide berth while the members hug one person at a time.
If you’re going “hey – everybody is on this but Kyuhyun, what gives? is this a recycled 2005 song?”, it’s cause he was in a terrible car accident in April 2007, which is presumably before this was recorded, and was not released from the hospital until July. And was not really fully recovered until fall or winter of that year at the earliest – SJ’s 2nd album came out in September and he was barely able to do promotions for it (which makes me wonder when exactly that album was recorded/single video made, because he is there, but ANYWAY that’s coming up soon).
RYEOWOOK SHOULD NEVER HAVE THIS HAIR AGAIN OH MY GOD
