Lyrics Only | Live (really live, low bitrate, with Sungmin and Leeteuk missing, and bad across the board – this performance could get its own post really) | Much Better Live (from 2011, which isn’t really fair, though Kyuhyun skips the B♭4)

Release Date: 09/20/2007

This is not actually about one of those passionate slap-kiss sorts of relationships, like you may have expected from the title. In this song, Super Junior has dumped their girl, and regrets it, and is sitting around brooding because they’re pissy that they weren’t able to move on as fast as they expected. My sympathy here is a bit lacking. Aside from that, it’s another one of those “only the good singers get to sing” songs, except we’re up to 8 people instead of 6, so they stuck Leeteuk and Heechul in. (Insert usual rant here about how Heechul should be rated in the 4-6 range, not 7-8.)

Structurally, this is pretty straightforward: verse/chorus/verse/chorus/bridge/chorus. Nobody sounds actively too awful (except Sungmin is suddenly loud and sharp in the second chorus on “jiwojiji anheun chaaaae“), and that’s helped out by the fact that the notes in the verses and choruses only span F3-G4, so nobody has to sing anything super-difficult. Ryeowook and Kyuhyun do get a A♭4 and B♭4 respectively in the bridge, and then it’s actually Kyuhyun belting a B♭4 and rather simply adlibbing into falsetto at the end over Yesung singing the main melody, which is a change. Kenzie wrote the tune on this and I like what she did by switching the bridge into D♭ major while the main song is in B♭ major (see SM, that’s a key change that makes sense); I also like the use of G♭ major instead of G major in the verses on “jebal nae gyeote isseojwo.” And I like the choice to let the first line of the third chorus be more or less a capella, because then you can hear that the harmony rhythmically isn’t just trailing the main melodic line (it sounds neat in the studio version and like a trainwreck live). There’s a vocal move that Heechul and Leeteuk both have to do that is kind of flat-bait; it’s on “neol bonaeya haetdeon nal” and “saneun naega sireosseo” going from F4 to B♮3. Heechul makes it easily; Leeteuk fumbles around before eventually landing it. (And weirdly, in the live version above where Heechul is singing his own part as well as Leeteuk’s, he nails it in his own verse and is way out of tune on Leeteuk’s.)

I guess basically what I’m saying is, that first live video up there suuuuuucks. But the song itself is pretty good. And they got a lot better at singing it later.
