Man, Hangeng and Kibum aren’t even gone for another two years after this but they certainly aren’t appearing on much of anything. But that’s not really a commentary on this song in particular, it’s just that I feel like there have been an awful lot of ballads on this album for what “Don’t Don” as a song/video was. This is a really good one, though!
Most of what I think of when I hear this, is that this could have been an SJ-KRY song. I think that’s mostly because it’s a passionate ballad with strong, effective harmonies powering the choruses, and probably would have fit in very well on an OST to something (it’s the scene where the guy sees his ex from long ago across a crowded room or the street, and she doesn’t see him but she looks happy with someone else, and he gets wistful and maybe goes walking down the street lost in thought). Yesung comes off the worst here in terms of tone because his is so breathy for whatever reason, but everyone seems to be in tune (Kyuhyun takes a stab at a belted B5 towards the end and it cuts off rather abruptly; they tried to cover it with fading/other voices but probably there was a big ol’ voice crack there). But this is arranged so powerfully, and it never goes below an E3 so we don’t have to worry about it being too low for Donghae, and really as far as songwriting my only complaint is that the “mianhae, my love” that leads into both choruses fakes out the listener into thinking it is the chorus. It probably could have been fixed by either having just one of “mianhae” or “my love”, or cutting the length of the “mianhaaaaaaae” in half.
And I mean, with nothing really to criticize, what do I have to say? This is a short review, but it’s solid and it’s good, and it’s what I was hoping would happen, that I’d find some lesser-known album track that turned out to be solid as hell. One of the best songs I’ve heard so far. Don’t Don as an album is turning out so far to be better than I expected (and significantly better than Twins).
