Aw man, really? A song about “just accept defeat bro, she loves ME not you” and it’s sung over a backdrop of something sweet and sparkly, like “Miracle?” But not sparkly in an aggressive/ironic way. More like, complete failure to express the smugness and/or irritation that a song like this should have.
Remember back on SJ-T’s “Don’t Go Away” where I talked about how oppressively bland the song was, and how it was non-conducive to writing? I’m about that way with this one. I’ve been sitting on this draft for three days now. Other songs, the words come so easily that I can write up 2-3 songs in a night. Ughhh. FORCE YOUR WAY THROUGH IT.
They tried to cover up the sparklyness of this by starting it off in A minor, but then most of the rest of the song wanders around between F, G, and Dmin, and NOT Amin, which points much more strongly to a general C major key. And really, that whole “never, or seldom, coming back to the tonic” thing sounds like indecision, or unsettledness. And in a song that is “lol you loser, she picked ME”, it makes Super Junior sound like they’re putting on a brave face, and maybe, if she really did pick them, the decision was closer than they’d like to admit. (As I said on “Marry U”, it’s weird to write about a relationship that is one girl and 13 dudes and not explicitly harem.)
Coming out of the second chorus into the bridge, Kangin sings “neol bonaejulteni”, and then the music continues unabated, with no guitar solo or style change or any other indicators of “instrumental break”, so it sounds like somebody forgot to sing, and then a few beats later, Donghae comes in with “deoneun andwae ije…” Not SJ’s fault, but KENZIE’S, who wrote the music and arranged this. Kenzie also wrote “Show Me Your Love,” which has earworm properties. And “Sunny”, coming up fairly soon, which is a better-written song than this, and also is earwormy. And also contributed to EXO’s “Wolf”, and f(x)’s “Red Light,” which is one of the most consistently goosebumpy songs I know (that bridge kills me). And lots of other stuff. ANYWAY. Point is, this is not her best work.
There’s an ACTUAL instrumental break after that, and a third chorus that sounds like it’s supposed to be clapped along to, but isn’t, and then some more instrumentals, and then the song suddenly ends. And so does this write-up.
