“Pajama Party” sounds like a happy bouncy disco song, but it is possibly the dirtiest song Super Junior ever did! It is also not as good of a song as the last one, unfortunately.
“Pajama Party” doesn’t have a plot like “Cooking? Cooking!” did, but the video does: some girls are having a sleepover, a gorilla comes and frightens them, they run into SJ-Happy’s room, pillow fights and G-rated hijinx ensue, and they eventually get the gorilla to go away by giving it bananas. If the girls are anybody in Kpop I have no idea who; it’s not anyone in SNSD. Based on that, and the general sound of the song, you would think this is a fun song about “let’s have a pajama party and eat popcorn and tell secrets and whack each other with pillows!”
But no! Take a look at that lyric video up there. This song is straight up about the first night you spend with your girlfriend. They try to blur it with a chorus about wearing pajamas and playing in a white snowy pillow fight world but SJ-Happy has spent a long time lighting candles and cooking dinner and may even be having some “sly thoughts” and. Yeah. This is about seducing your girlfriend. Covered up with Shindong’s weird elbow dance.
I do really like Eunhyuk’s very rhythmic rap that starts the song off, and someone is doing interesting background vocals in the choruses; listen for “uli duli sinnageEEEEEE nolayo something something PARTY“. This is not like, a super exceptional vocal line, but SJ mostly just sticks to a single vocal line so it’s neat to hear this when it does happen. Shindong sings, sort of; Kangin and Leeteuk and Sungmin all do fine because this sits between F3-G4 which is an easy range for all of them; Yesung sounds out of place again as the “serious singer.” The chorus seems to be written weirdly; I can’t put my finger on it but my brain thinks that the entire two bars containing “nolayoooo” don’t exist. Like, “uli duli sinnageeee PAJAMA IPGO!”
It’s a weird video to look at, because all the wrong people are cute in it. Shindong has actually WORSE hair here than in “Cooking? Cooking!” (it’s some sort of floofy mullet thing), and Sungmin and Kangin, who are usually moderately cute/attractive, look overly smiley. The weird overexposed-ness of some of the shots (see that first gif up there) is not helping with that. Kangin brings the deep v-neck back; I think he got jealous seeing Hangeng in it. Also Sungmin wearing wings pushes his cutesiness over the top; how are you gonna sleep in wings, Sungmin?? In the meantime, Eunhyuk comes off as vaguely hot (cf that lip bite at the end of above gif), and so does Leeteuk oddly enough, who I usually find a little too “forced smile” and try-hardy. I think honestly, it’s that he’s skinny in this video, which isn’t inherently a good or bad thing but it’s the skinniness and the loose-fitting pajamas they’re all wearing and for some reason that’s a good for me. I know later he got self-conscious about aging and Siwon’s absiness and so he got all buffed up but I think I like skinny pajama Leeteuk better. And his hair is good here too. And I also feel super weird writing a paragraph about attractiveness because this is a music blog but at the same time that’s sort of part of the whole kpop idol thing, so I guess that justifies it?
