Oh my god, this song is adorable.
Super Junior Happy has a thing for plots: Cooking? Cooking! had the plot of the bad-cook girlfriend who becomes a good-cook girlfriend; Pajama Party had the video with the girls running to the boys’ room to escape the hungry gorilla. This song features Yesung as a sad brokenhearted guy, and the rest of SJ-H as his friends who are trying to set him up with a new girl.
The first verse is Sungmin and Kangin talking to a girl about “I know this super great guy, he’d make a wonderful boyfriend, but he’s sad because a girl’s broken his heart, you really ought to give him a chance he’s so great.” The second verse is Yesung talking about how he’d like to meet her, to see if he can love again. Eunhyuk and Shindong chime in about how they’re going to be such a cute couple. The bridge is Yesung seeing her and saying “oh dang she IS cute” and Sungmin pops up with literally “what did we tell you!” In each chorus, Leeteuk asks the girl to please give their friend a chance and he wishes the new couple good luck, and at the VERY VERY END Yesung softly sings “I’ll do my best” AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA THIS SONG.
Lyrical squeeness aside, this melody is written so sweetly, especially in the verses. It’s a very almost classical/Baroque-sounding melody that gently works its way downward, and that pattern continues in the chord progression in the choruses. The acapella bits at the very beginning and going into the last chorus, I could take or leave; I don’t think they add much to the song (but they’re not bad). Speaking of the last chorus, there is a weird 8 bars of nothing but hi-hat, and I don’t know if it’s supposed to be building tension about Yesung and the girl’s relationship or what, but it feels like the song goes into a holding pattern. That is really my only complaint about how this is written/produced, though.
And with this song, SJ Happy ends up with an average of 6.87 (as of the time of this post, SJ-M currently has a 4.74, SJ-T has a 5.01, SJ-KRY has a 6.39, and main SJ has a 5.43). That is pretty damn good for a “joke” subunit.
Up next, some solo/OST work, and then the biggest hit Super Junior ever had. Stay tuned!
