Hey neat, it’s the song from SS2 that was not actually released until a month later! Hey neat, it also makes more sense now why they did it early; it’s not an original song. It’s actually a cover of a Dutch song from 2005. So in that regard, it’s not as weird, I guess. Also semi-surprising that again, everyone’s on this other than Heechul (and TVXQ and SHINee, lol).
Despite being another islandy calypso song, much like “Seaside”, this one I think works better. Part of it is that it doesn’t have ten other guys crowding up the song – eleven is plenty, thanks. Part of it also is that, also unlike “Seaside,” it’s not laden with ineffective, fake-sounding “Woo-hoo!”s and “Yeah let’s go!”s and laughing. (I have been wondering if my problem with SNSD is more internalized misogyny or if it’s more how bad they are at the fake “Woo-hoo!”s. I do like other Korean girl groups. Or both. Still pondering.)
Yesung sounds considerably better here than he did on anything in Super Show 2. It kind of makes me wonder, how processed are the not-obviously processed vocals in SJ songs of this era (the end of the song with obvious vocodering on Ryeowook and Kyuhyun, or things like “Sorry Sorry“, doesn’t count), and if the answer is “not very”, how many takes did they need to get a decent vocal out of Yesung? Especially when it doesn’t sound like they were using a huge amount of takes on some of the other people?
Siwon and Hangeng stick out again; they’re not out of tune but they are singing “flatly,” so to speak. Not in terms of pitch, just in terms of I guess tone, energy, something. Hangeng is gone soon, chronologically, and by later songs Siwon doesn’t stick out as badly.
