“Boom Boom”, the second song on the Bonamana album, is again, “God she’s so hot, I’m so obsessed, maybe I shouldn’t be? But ughhh so hoooooot.” Super Junior seems to be less inspired-sounding when they are singing about how hot girls are; they do better with love songs. Also isn’t this the exact same premise of “Bonamana“, which is directly before this on the album, other than with added doubt in it?
There’s a better song hiding inside this one. That better song does three things. First, it would take out the Twinkle Twinkle Little Star bit, because maybe the melody in that pre-chorus is taken from some Korean children’s rhyme (I don’t actually know), but “Twinkle Twinkle Little Star, god that girl is fucking hot” is a weird association to make. Secondly, it would fill the eighth bar of the chorus with something. The chorus of “Boom Boom” is seven bars long with instrumental in the eighth bar, basically just vamping. Near the end of the song they skip the eighth bar altogether and just repeat the chorus again. (Maybe they should also take out the “aniya stop!” – I don’t like it because it breaks up the song too much, but having a proper eighth bar might help with that.) Third, it tones down the autotune, because there are singers in this group who don’t need it (like say, Ryeowook), and given that some members of the group do need it (like say, Siwon), it sounds like it’s covering for mistakes that were not necessarily there.
Sungmin is not especially good at singing “sexy” songs, and I don’t think it’s because he’s the aegyo-y cute one so I can’t see him as sexy; I think it’s just that he’s not very good at evoking that emotion vocally because he has such a tendency to sing through his nose in the upper half of his range. Siwon gets a falsetto “hoo/woo” in the second verse that Kyuhyun did much better in the first one, but Kyuhyun sounds awful on this song, and I think it’s partially that he doesn’t sound sold on the song (nobody other than maybe Heechul and Donghae does) and partially that this is mixed with the vocals way too low in relation to the synths. There’s also two bars of unnecessary instrumental vamping between the second chorus and Eunhyuk’s rap bridge. It’s also one of the more “talk”y Eunhyuk raps, in which he sounds like he’s losing track a little bit of where the beat is (this is why I tend to like his very rhythmic raps like in “Pajama Party“).
Lest you think I hate this song, I actually don’t, because I can see how I could have liked this song better. It just needs to be tightened up. And I do like the “almyeon dwaetgo go, go-go go, go-go go (hey!)” stuff. I feel like they’ve used this fanfare riff in other things I’ve seen, like intro to Super Show 3 maybe, or the All About Super Junior DVD set. Or maybe I’m just conflating it with “Superman.” (Come to think of it actually, maybe “Superman” is the better version of this. ANYWAY WE’LL GET THERE AROUND THANKSGIVING)
